Our Story

Salve & Oak Co. began at home, with a problem we were simply trying to solve for ourselves.

After having our son, I began dealing with skin issues that lasted for years. I tried product after product, but nothing seemed to make much of a difference. DJ eventually wondered if the problem might be all the extra ingredients in the things I was using. Maybe something simpler, made with thoughtfully chosen ingredients and without a long list of unnecessary additives, would be better.

So he made something for me.

A botanical serum and a butter. Simple products made with ingredients chosen because of what they could actually bring to the skin.

And they helped.

That was really the beginning of Salve & Oak.

We started thinking that I probably wasn’t the only person looking for something different. If products made with intentional ingredients could make such a difference for me, maybe they could help someone else too.

Why Salve & Oak?

Our name is deeply personal to us.

Salve & Oak is a nod to our two children, whose names begin with S and O. But we also loved what the words represented together.

A salve feels soft, soothing, and comforting.

An oak is strong, rugged, and enduring.

That balance felt like us, and it became the foundation for the kind of brand we wanted to create: warm and comforting, but grounded and strong.

Where Routine Becomes Ritual

Most of us have routines we have to do every day. We shower. We shave. We take care of our skin. We get ready for the day, and we wind down at night.

But just because something is routine doesn’t mean it has to feel ordinary.

That is what “Where Routine Becomes Ritual” means to us.

We want those everyday moments to become something you actually look forward to. A scent that makes you slow down for a second. A shave that becomes more than another task. A shower that feels like a reset at the end of a long day.

Those small moments matter.

Made Together

Salve & Oak is truly a family business.

I’m Heather, and I tend to be the business side of things. DJ is our research-and-development mind—the person who loves digging into formulations, ingredients, and figuring out how to make something better.

But most of what Salve & Oak becomes, we create together.

We develop scents together. We talk through products and formulas. We work on labels, ideas, and new concepts side by side. Some parts of the business are completely mine, some are completely DJ’s, and a lot of it exists somewhere in between.

There isn’t a large team behind the scenes.

It’s us.

A Love for Traditional Shaving

Wet shaving became a natural part of Salve & Oak because it had already been part of DJ’s life for years.

He loves the entire experience of traditional shaving, but just as importantly, he loves the community around it. The friendships, camaraderie, conversations, and shared enthusiasm for the ritual of shaving have meant a lot to him.

As Salve & Oak grew, bringing that passion into the business simply made sense.

It gave us another opportunity to take something people have to do and turn it into something they can genuinely enjoy.

Thoughtful Ingredients. Thoughtful Products.

One of the things that remains most important to us is being intentional about what goes into the products we make.

We don’t want ingredients in a formula just because they are commonly used or because they fill space on an ingredient list. We spend time thinking about what each ingredient contributes and what it can bring to the skin.

Our goal has never been to make products that feel mass-produced.

We make small batches. We test. We adjust. We talk about what we would want to use ourselves.

And when something isn’t right, we keep working on it.

The Coffeehouse

Some products become more personal than others.

For me, that product is The Coffeehouse.

I am absolutely a gourmand girl, and I love a good cup of coffee. When I created The Coffeehouse, I didn’t want it to smell like a generic “coffee fragrance.” I wanted it to smell like somewhere I would actually want to be.

A warm coffee shop. A favorite drink in your hands. Sweet, comforting aromas in the air. That feeling of settling in for a while and enjoying where you are.

It became one of those scents that reminds me why I love creating in the first place.

When It Became Real

There wasn’t one giant moment when Salve & Oak suddenly became a business.

For us, it was much simpler than that.

It was when people we didn’t know wanted to buy our products.

There is something different about having friends and family support what you’re doing and then realizing that complete strangers have discovered something you made and want to bring it into their homes.

What has surprised us most is just how supportive people have been.

Every order, message, recommendation, review, and conversation has helped Salve & Oak grow.

We don’t take that lightly.

Rooted in the Pacific Northwest

We are Pacific Northwest people through and through.

We have both spent the majority of our lives here, and so much of what we love about this area naturally finds its way into Salve & Oak.

The greenery. The forests. The mountains. The rain. The quiet comfort of being surrounded by nature.

That warm, grounded PNW feeling is something we hope you can sense throughout the brand.

Still Growing

Salve & Oak is still a home-based, family-owned and operated business, and we are proud of that.

We personally create, make, package, and build this business one product and one order at a time.

We hope it continues to grow, and one day, we would love to open a Salve & Oak storefront of our own—a place where people can walk in, smell everything, explore the products, and experience the brand in person.

But no matter how much we grow, we want Salve & Oak to continue feeling the way it did when it began:

Personal. Thoughtful. Comfortable. Intentional.

Thank you for supporting our family, our little business, and the things we create.

We hope Salve & Oak brings a little more comfort to the things you already do every day.
